Remember to do these 7 things before giving birth

Article by Cherlynn Ng

Being prepared is half the battle won, and this saying is especially true when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. The last thing you want to do panicking when your water breaks and not knowing what to do. Now that you’ve seen our list of things to do after giving birth, here are tasks to do BEFORE your due date.

1. Create a birth plan

A birth plan is an outline of your preferences for before, during and after labour and delivery. Even though childbirth is unpredictable, it helps to have a birth plan on hand so that your wishes will be taken into consideration when the time comes. Some things to think about are who you want around during labour, whether you want any pain relief and what positions you want to use in the delivery room.

2. Stock up on baby supplies

Despite their tiny size, babies have many needs and go through supplies faster than you might think. Ensure that you have all the necessities such as diapers, clean clothes and other equipment ready for their arrival. You probably have been spending the past few months working on the perfect nursery for your angel, and now’s time to add the finishing touches.

3. Get a high-quality baby cot

A baby cot is one of those things you shouldn’t scrimp on, though there’s no need to splash out on an ultra-posh one either. The important thing here is to look for something both safe and multi-functional (which will save you money in the long run!). With the wide variety of options available on the market, it’s not difficult to find the perfect crib that’s durable as well as affordably priced.

4. Hire a confinement nanny

Your to-do list will stretch even further once your baby arrives. Imagine having a little one to care for on top of your usual responsibilities. Sounds daunting? Not to worry as a confinement nanny can help you out with the menial stuff while you focus on recuperating and bonding with your newborn. She will come in handy for tasks such as household chores, cooking nutritious confinement meals, baby care and more!

A confinement lady can also prove to be a comforting source of emotional support as you adjust to your new role as a mother, especially if your loved ones are unable to be physically there all the time due to other commitments e.g. work. Having a confinement nanny around can take away a lot of stress and confusion that often arise during the early days of parenting.

5. Pack your hospital bag

You don’t want to be in the hospital, only to realise that you have forgotten something at home and end up stressing even more. Packing your hospital bag in advance will save you lots of grief. Come up with a checklist of necessities you will require and tick them off accordingly.

Some essentials include toiletries, comfortable clothes, your phone and charger, and important documents. You can also bring small gifts or treats as a token of appreciation to the medical staff who will be taking care of you.

6. Prepare for breastfeeding

If you are planning to breastfeed your baby, now is a good time to learn as much as you can about it. There are a lot of helpful resources and advice out there, from how to improve breast milk supply to getting your baby to latch on properly. You can also talk to fellow nursing mums or take a breastfeeding class. Remember to get all the necessities ready e.g. breast pump, breast milk storage bag, nursing scarf, baby bottle and cleaning tools.

7. Relax

As difficult and impossible as it seems, considering how you are going through a life-altering event, try to keep calm and relax. Stressing unnecessarily will do neither you nor your baby good, and can even result in premature labour. It also increases the risk of having a small baby.

Practice relaxation techniques to take anxiety off your back and keep you grounded. Examples are deep breathing, prenatal yoga and progessive muscle relaxation. You can also do simple stretching exercises to enhance flexibility, loosen yourself up and feel more at ease. They will even help you to sleep better!
