Remember to do these 5 things after giving birth
Article by Cherlynn Ng
Congrats! You’ve just left the hospital with the latest addition to your family: A happy, bubbly baby. You start to plan your next steps… and before you know it, your to-do list seems like it has no end in sight. If anything, you are starting to feel like childbirth is the easiest part.
Well, you are right in thinking that labour is just the beginning. But instead of beating yourself up over it, check out this simple list of five things that you can do to get started.
1. Register the birth
Make this joyous occasion official by registering your infant’s birth within 14 days. The most convenient way would be to do this at the hospital right away for a reasonable administrative fee. Alternatively, you may visit the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) building.
Regardless of which option you go for, remember to bring along all relevant documents. You will typically require:
• Your original marriage certificate
• Both parents’ identity cards
• A birth notification form issued by the hospital
2. Get insurance
It’s best to purchase health insurance policies for your newborn as early as possible, especially if they have no health complications and can therefore enjoy full coverage without any exclusions. Of course, nobody wants their little angel to fall sick but in the event of such situations, a hefty medical bill would be the last thing you want to deal with.
Save yourself the headache and start planning in advance. Speak to a trusted advisor or agent and convey your needs to them, so that they can make recommendations accordingly. Some policies you probably don’t want to go without are hospitalisation and critical illness plans.
3. Plan confinement meals
A nutritious diet benefits both the mother and the child she is breastfeeding. Eating right can speed up your postpartum recovery, boost breast milk supply as well as improve your mood — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
You will probably want to focus on other things like bonding with your baby or bouncing back to your pre-pregnancy routine after giving birth, so why not consider hiring a professional confinement nanny? Not only will she be able to assist with household chores, she can also whip up sumptuous yet nourishing confinement dishes to keep you in the pink of health.
4. Simple exercises
Exercise is a constructive way of adjusting to your new life while maintaining some semblance of the old. It relieves stress, keeps you feeling positive and gives you some alone time amidst all the hustle and bustle that comes with welcoming a child.
There are many easy exercises that you can do within the comforts of your own home, such as kegels and pelvic tilts. Whether it’s picking up some new moves from a tutorial video or sticking to a comfortable routine, the options are endless. Even a short outdoor stroll makes a difference.
5. Take photos
Motherhood is a priceless journey that not everyone gets to experience, so don’t feel shy if you want to take loads of photos to immortalise every moment. In fact, we highly encourage it. The pictures will make beautiful mementos that you can look back on fondly in future with your now-not-so-little one.
Maybe you want to create a scrapbook to document your baby at every stage of his or her development. Or perhaps you prefer sharing videos of them on a dedicated Instagram account. Feel free to let your creative juices run wild!
