Happy Chinese New Year to all of the Singapore families! Chinese New Year reunions are a beautiful sight, but for a new family, it is often the first time your little one meets the extended family. While these moments are precious, a festive crowd requires a special approach to ensure your baby remains calm, healthy, and happy.
As a confinement nanny agency, we believe the best celebrations are those where both Mum and Baby feel protected. Here are some tips to ensure keeping your little one in a “safety bubble” while there are visitors.
1. Maintain Social Distancing with Newborn
In a crowded home, it is easy for physical boundaries to disappear. However, maintaining distance is the most effective way to shield an infant whose immune system is still developing. Since newborns cannot be masked, the “distance barrier” is their primary defense.
Aim to keep yourself, your baby, and any older siblings at least 6 feet (about 2 meters) away from others who are not part of your immediate household.
2. Wash Hands for 20 Seconds Before Touching the Baby
Hand hygiene is the most critical ritual of the festive season, especially after handling red packets or communal snacks. Washing hands before touching a baby is crucial to prevent the transmission of germs, as babies have immature immune systems and are highly susceptible to serious infections.
Using soap and water for 40-60 seconds is recommended, though hand sanitizer is an effective alternative if soap is unavailable and hands are not visibly soiled. This small gesture shows the parents that you are a partner in keeping their baby healthy.
3. Always Ask Before Visiting (Even During Open House)
Unlike a typical CNY “Open House,” a confinement home follows a strict schedule of rest and healing. Before dropping by, always text or call to ask for a specific time. New moms are often exhausted from sleepless nights and may not be ready for a crowd. Be understanding if they prefer to skip visitors this year, your respect for their space is a gift in itself.
4. Reschedule if You Are Feeling Unwell
This is the most important rule of festive visiting. If you have even a slight scratchy throat, a sniffle, or have recently been exposed to someone who is sick, please stay home. Reschedule your visit for a later date or offer a “Virtual Gong Xi” via video call. A healthy baby is the most auspicious start to the year.
5. Never Kiss the Baby
It may be a traditional way to show affection, but never kiss a newborn. A simple kiss can transmit viruses (like HSV-1 or RSV) that are dangerous for infants. Limit your affection to smiles and warm words. If you want to be close, ask if you can gently touch the baby’s feet instead of their face or hands.
6. Avoid Strong Fragrances and Perfumes
Newborns are highly sensitive to scents. When visiting, avoid wearing strong perfumes, colognes, or heavily scented lotions. Strong smells can be overwhelming for a baby and may even trigger allergic reactions or fussiness. A “scent-free” guest is a comfortable guest for a newborn.
Visiting a new family during the Chinese New Year is a special honor. By being mindful of these precautions, like respecting the 6-foot rule, practicing hand hygiene, and avoiding physical contact like kissing to ensure the visit is a positive experience.
Remember, the best way to say “Gong Xi Fa Cai” to a new mom is to show her that you care about her baby’s safety as much as she does.
