4 reasons you sweat more during confinement

Article by Rachel Ang & Cherlynn Ng

Find yourself sweating a lot more like you have just finished a marathon during your confinement, even though all you have been doing is resting at home? You are not alone. Chill out (pun intended, haha) and don’t worry. Not only is postpartum sweating completely normal, it also tends to occur more often when you are asleep.

Here are four reasons why you might be perspiring so much during your postpartum recovery and what you can do.

1. Increased blood volume

Your blood volume increases during pregnancy. As there is no longer any need to supply your foetus with blood and nourishment, this volume will be returned to your body for recirculation, resulting in strong sweat excretion. Thankfully, this will gradually stabilise within a week after delivery.

2. Too much soup in your diet

This results in frequent urination and hyperhidrosis. However, that doesn’t mean you should eliminate soup from your confinement diet. After all, they are nutritious and essential to your recovery. It is also important to stay hydrated, especially if you are experiencing excessive sweating or are still breastfeeding. Just remember that moderation is key!

3. Weakened physique

Your body is prone to night sweats and fatigue in its weakened state after childbirth. Having a balanced diet will help to keep your energy levels up, boost recuperation and keep your spirits up. A confinement nanny not only helps to prepare confinement meals that are as delicious as they are healthy, but can also advise on your needs accordingly. Don’t forget to get plenty of rest and keep stress at bay.

4. High indoor temperature

High heat and humidity will no doubt make you sweat more. Adjust the room temperature to a comfortable level between 25°C – 28°C. and make sure you are not facing any direct wind. We also recommend wearing loose and lightweight clothing – cotton is a popular choice.

If you continue to feel uncomfortable for prolonged periods of time, you may have a physical condition and should seek medical advice promptly.
