6 helpful things you can do for the new mum in your life

Article by Cherlynn Ng

Being a mother is one of the most noble professions in the world. It’s also a 24/7 job with no sick leave or rest days, only a never-ending list of things to do. Do you have a wife or loved one who recently welcomed a baby? Then you might be familiar with the feeling of wanting to help but not knowing how, especially when your heart aches at how exhausted and drained she seems. Well, look no further than this checklist to get you started.

1. Help with household chores

Housework will probably be the last thing on a new mum’s mind, especially if they have just gotten home from the hospital not long ago or are still in the confinement period. She should be focusing on letting her body heal after childbirth and spending quality time with her newborn instead of worrying about menial tasks during this time. Moreover, it’s best if she avoids strenuous physical activity or back-breaking work in her weakened and fatigued state.

Why not help to shorten her to-do list by completing household chores? It can be something simple like washing the dishes, sweeping and mopping the floor or changing the bedsheets. If you want something on a bigger scale, consider redecorating or decluttering. Freshening up the home will benefit everyone in the household, yourself included.

2. Cook her a nice meal

It’s important for new mothers to have a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle to speed up the recovery process. A nutritious confinement menu consists of wholegrains, lots of protein and vitamins, and healthy fats. How about treating her to a lovely home-cooked meal? This is a good opportunity to get creative in the kitchen or pick up some culinary skills.

There are a variety of confinement dishes, both simple and complex, that you can try your hand at. Beginners can dabble in soups or smoothies for a start. Those who are more experienced can prepare foods that are catered according to a mother’s specific needs, such as boosting breast milk supply, fighting postpartum depression or recuperation from a Caesarean birth.

3. Take turns caring for baby

Sleepless nights are often synonymous with the arrival of a newborn. Unless you have a confinement nanny, chances are parents will be taking turns to wake up in wee hours of the night to feed your baby or attend to his cries. A baby’s irregular sleeping patterns at this stage also means a lot of unpredictability and exhaustion.

Give mummies a well-deserved rest by volunteering to care for their baby, even if it’s just for one night. You might be surprised at how recharged and revitalised she will be the next day! Allowing her to wake up in a better frame of mind will also leave her more productive and ready to take on the world.

4. Run errands on her behalf

New mums probably have their hands full with watching the baby, managing the household while still taking care of their own health. Take some weight off her weary shoulders by helping to run errands. For instance, volunteer to do a grocery run to stock up on necessities, pick up the laundry or collect the mail.

5. Surprise her with a small gift

Brighten up a new mum’s day and spread some cheer by surprising her with a present. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive, and can be as simple as bringing home her favourite candy. This little gesture of love will mean the world to her during this demanding period and amidst all her day-to-day responsibilities.  The important thing here is to let her know that you are thinking of her and appreciate everything she has done for the family. As the saying goes, it’s the thought that counts. The smallest gestures can mean the world.

6. Lend a listening ear

Last but not least, always be ready to lend a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Your loved one is probably facing immense stress and struggling to cope with her additional duties as a new mum. The best way you can help is by letting her know that you will always be there for her no matter what. Allow her to speak her mind and share her fears, if any, so that you have a better idea of what she is going through.
