Baby got injured? Here are 5 natural remedies to heal scars

Article by Cherlynn Ng

Sometimes, kids injure themselves despite our best efforts. It’s part and parcel of life. Still, it undoubtedly hurts our heart when we see our children injured or in pain. But rather than panicking or stressing out unnecessarily, we should stay well-prepared and ensure that we are always equipped with the right knowledge and tools.

You might also be looking for safe ways to fade or heal your baby’s scars. For those concerned about commercial products and their contents, you will be glad to know that there are a variety of home remedies that can do the job just as effectively. You might even already have these items in your house!

1. Aloe vera

On top of its antibacterial and antifungal properties, aloe vera also soothes and moisturises the skin. Apply it to your baby’s scar and leave it on for 30 minutes. Do this up to twice a day to speed up healing.

Other uses: Heal burns, reduce dental plaque, treat mouth ulcers and sores, relieve heartburn and sunburn, lower blood sugar, as a skincare ingredient.

2. Coconut oil

Another reputable scar-reduction product, coconut oil acts as a thick, moisturising barrier as skin starts to heal. Warm the oil and gently massage it on your baby’s scar for around three to four minutes. Repeat this up to thrice a day.

Other uses: Improve teeth, hair and skin health, relieve skin irritation and eczema, fight infections, increase metabolism and fat burn, reduce belly fat, boost brain function, decrease hunger, act as a natural deodorant.

3. Tomato slices

Rubbing tomato slices on skin can help to reduce the appearance of scars. Thanks to their high vitamin and antioxidant content, tomatoes are a great way of healing damaged tissue and promoting skin regeneration.

4. Honey

Known for its anti-acne properties, raw honey is packed with nutrients for the skin. Besides balancing the bacteria on your skin, it accelerates the healing process and reduces inflammation as well. It is also moisturising and a natural exfoliator, thus helping to remove dry and dull skin to reveal a brighter complexion. To use honey as a spot treatment on scars, massage honey over the problem area for a few minutes before rinsing off.

5. Toothpaste

Toothpaste is effective in lightening scars. Simply rub a small amount on the affected area, leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash off. You can do this twice a day. It’s recommended that you use baby toothpaste to prevent irritation.

Take note, parents: As effective as these home remedies might be, the first thing you should do when your baby is hurt or injured is to see a doctor immediately. Seek treatment and do not attempt to self-medicate before a professional diagnosis or proper medical advice.
