5 ways to keep you and your family safe during Covid-19

Article by Cherlynn Ng

With 308,592 reported cases globally and a death toll of over 13,000, the Covid-19 pandemic has hit 188 countries and continues to spread rapidly. Singapore, which has 432 confirmed cases, reported its first two fatalities on 21 March. There is no sign that the virus will be abating anytime soon, with officials warning that the outbreak will likely last till end-2020.

Do not panic, however. The government is doing its best to contain the spread of the virus and you can play your part too. Staying vigilant and being socially responsible will go a long way in keeping you and your family safe. Start by following these simple tips!

1. Wash your hands regularly

Did you know that up to 80 percent of all infections are transmitted by hands? The things we touch in a day — money, door handles, grab poles on public transport, our mobile devices and more — make our hands a hotbed for bacteria.

Therefore, regular hand-washing is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy and stop the spread of germs. Follow these steps to ensure clean hands:

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water, turn off the tap and apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Don’t miss areas such as between your fingers and under your nails.
  • Do this for at least 20 seconds (a good way to measure this is to hum the ‘Happy Birthday’ song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands under clean, running water.
  • Dry your hands properly.

Although soap and water is the best way to kill bacteria, they might not always be readily accessible e.g. when you are outdoors. In this case, it’s good to be prepared and leave home with a bottle of hand sanitiser in your bag.

2. Practice social distancing

Social distancing is meant to help slow down the spread of a contagious virus and requires responsibility on one’s part. That means avoiding crowds, packed places and large-scale gatherings. Besides the government advising Singaporeans to defer all travel, other measures being implemented include the suspension of all events with 250 or more participants and a separation of at least one metre between patrons at cinemas, F&B outlets and shops.

3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Most of those who succumbed to Covid-19 were elderly and/or had underlying health conditions, resulting in a weakened constitution. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help to keep your immune system robust and fight infections better. This means having a balanced diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep.

4. Stay informed

It’s important to stay updated on the latest happenings involving the current Covid-19 pandemic. Being in the know when it comes to the latest advisories and precautionary measures that the government has rolled out will allow you to stay ahead of the game and better protect yourself. It also helps to avoid unnecessary panic. However, make sure to stick to reliable sources and refrain from spreading misinformation.

5. See a doctor when unwell

Being responsible also means reducing physical contact with other people and seeing a doctor promptly when unwell. By doing so, you lower the risk of spreading any viruses to your loved ones and can receive the right treatment accordingly. Do not attempt to self-medicate — ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs can worsen effects of the coronavirus.
